چکیده

The current exposure limits of mineworkers to physical pollutants, under the Mine Health and Safety Act3 is 85 dB LAeq,8h, with a peak sound pressure level of 135 dB(A). However, the sound pressure level (SPL) of machines is generally determined according to the methods and procedures defined in SABS-ISO 3744 under free field conditions as defined in Appendix 3 of the same standard. While SPL and sound spectrum data obtained by this method are extremely useful for sound engineering purposes and direct comparison between different machines, the results can be considered only as an indication of the SPL level that any machine may produce during operation in an underground environment. In particular, the limitations of the free field method of SPL prediction of an expected SPL in the underground environment are as follows:

Drilling Trajectory Prediction Model for Push-the-bit Rotary Steerable Bottom Hole Assembly

The study of rotary steering drilling technology is currently one of the hot topics in the drilling engineering field. It requires accurate well trajectory control instructions when rotary steerable tools are applied to achieve the well trajectory control goal. A drilling trajectory prediction model will benefit this progress. According to the continuous beam theory, a mechanical model of push-...

Long-term simulations of thermal and hydraulic characteristics in a mountain massif: the Mont-Blanc case study, French and Italian Alps

The use of hydrothermal simulation models to improve the prediction of water inflows in underground works during drilling is tested in the Mont-Blanc tunnel, French and Italian Alps. The negative thermal anomaly that was observed during the drilling of this tunnel in 1960 is reproduced by long-term, transient hydrothermal simulations. Sensitivity analysis shows the great inertia of thermal phen...

The evolution of drill bit and chuck isolators to reduce roof bolting machine drilling noise

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. To address this problem, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is the roof bolting machine. Field studies show t...

Gas Drainage Improvement in Underground Coal Mines

Effective gas management is vital to the success of the longwall mining in the Bulli seam, in the Southern Coalfield, Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia. The evolution of gas drainage methods and practices are discussed with respect to gas type, gas drainage lead time and prevailing geological conditions. Both underground to inseam drilling and surface to inseam drilling techniques are described at b...

A pragmatic simulation of karst spring discharge with semi- distributed models. Advantages and limits for assessing the effect of climate change

A hydrological semi-distributed model for simulating karst springs discharge is presented and applied to the Flims case study (Graubünden) and the Milandrine underground river (Jura). This model used for flood prediction and management in river basins has been adapted to karst flow and springs. The model takes into account snowmelt, glacier melt, soil infiltration, evapotranspiration as well as...
